Australia - Indonesia relations 1.5 track dialogue

DFAT Media Release: Strengthening Australia - Indonesia relations with 1.5 track dialogue
November 20, 2025
Jakarta, Indonesia

The Australian Institute of International Affairs, with support from the Australian Government, hosted the Australia-Indonesia 1.5 Track Dialogue today in Jakarta, bringing together parliamentarians, senior officials, academia, civil society, and business leaders, all of whom are invested in deepening Australia-Indonesia relations.

The dialogue traced 75 years of Australia-Indonesia relations, fostered ties between Australian and Indonesian leaders, and provided a forum to look ahead to how Australia and Indonesia can build our future together in an increasingly unstable world.

Tim Watts, Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs and Australian Head of Delegation, said, “Australians have long known that our future security and prosperity will be determined in our region – the Indo-Pacific. As our region becomes more dynamic, complex and consequential than ever before, Australia’s relationship with Indonesia is based on friendship, trust, and mutual respect.”

“Connections between people are at the heart of our relationship. Beyond government initiatives, it is personal and professional links, among researchers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, that keep the Indonesia-Australia relationship dynamic and enduring,” Watts added.
